Photos are complite propoganda from russia, They are trying to imitate how good life was in USSR. Photos are complite lie. However photos are good.

  3. PJ Says:

Nice photo’s, they give a interesting and colorful view of the old Sovjet-Union..

  4. Markus Says:

I like furry hats. The furry hats were good.

  10. vb Says:

    To Latvian:
I think u’re have serious psychological problems with everything about USSR and Russia. :) I didn’t know that empty shelves in the food shops represent good life…

  11. Mme U Says:

Interesting and poignant compilation of fotos! I did not have the good fortune to know anything about the life in USSR times! However, I think it is telling that in a poll 86% of Russians wanted it to return to such a system. I am impressed with the Teamwork and effort I see in the Russian people who grew up in the USSR times! I also see there is not so much “Atomized Alienation and Anomie” in these people as I in the “Independent” Western people, and NOTHING IS FREE IN THE WEST!!!! What more to say?

  12. Gleno Says:

Nothing is free ANYWHERE, my friend. Communism failed completely. Perhaps some Russians would return to the old system because that is what they knew; however, in my travels in Belarus and Ukraine, no one I met would go back to the Soviet era, Russian hegemony.
Eastern Europe is beautiful and the people are among the best in the world, but there is no denying that Communism killed many people (directly and indirectly) and that the USSR was a horrible place to live.

  13. Andrew Says:

    travel down memory lane…..
    really fantastic…..

  14. another citizen of Latvia Says:

2 Citizen of Latvia: If I find my own old negative BW films I can produce the same bunch of soviet times photos. Try also visiting Kino-Photo archive near Rigas kinostudija in Riga, and browse through the pictures — it’s free.
Life at that time wasn’t good at all, but many people truly were and these pictures depicted it. Nice selection!

  15. Ryan Says:

Lovely photos. A side of the old Soviet Union I have not seen. Wonderful.

  16. Dimitrije from Serbia Says:

    Beautifull lifely selection.
    Russia = people(big number)= life …Dont forget China, India, Brasil …
    Western world = petrol,electricity,fast cars,plasma TV,mobile phones,talk shows,fast life,deadly weapons,empty brains (big number)= no smile

Long live Russia, for their own sake & for the sake of any other that care for the smile on the face (big number on the pictures)

2 latvian….Don’t worry - It’s not your fault you don’t understend. It seems you are watching TV too much. Turn it off, and look around you. There is people you can talk to…

  17. Andrey Says:

Gleno, how can you say that USSR was a horrible place to live? Have you lived there? Though i spent only my early childhood in Communist Russia and don’t remember much, my parents and grandparents spoke a lot about life in USSR and majority of those comments was far from being negative. Yes, people didn’t have a freedom to travel to other countries, or speak up against the government but they were happy and safe, happier and safer than most of Russians now. Even at funeral of Stalin, who killed millions, the whole nation was crying…

  18. Bela Says:

    yeah,-

-the first half of my life, it wasn’t easy but we were content and human…somehow it made more sense…

Sadly, it wasn’t allowed to succeed; it was strangulated by cultural, trade and financial blockade, and it’s incompetent leadership …

  19. JS Says:

Hello I really enjoyed these pictures some really ponnient captures, I especially liked the old lady:
Face has lived twice that of her body, yet she still has a sparkle in her eyes.

But my favourite is of the factory worker not shaking the ”business” man’s hand:
could anyone tell me if he is someone famous or possibly what the writting underneath says?

    Thank you!

  20. JS Says:

    *poignant, sorry!

  21. Tom Says:

That “businessman” was Leonid Brezhnev, the General Secretary of the Communist party from 1964 to 1982.

  22. Greg Says:

And the factory man would be crazy not to shake hand - he at least would lose his job and be blacklisted.

  23. GregGreg Says:

    Andrey:

I left USSR at 32 just one month before it collapsed. I can not speak about life there today, but before it was far from picnic. You parents and grandparent most likely were talking about their youth - not about life in USSR in general. It is a big difference.

The picture is a mix of true life scenes bordering with real art and blatant propaganda, which became almost a form of art now.

My wife and I looked in it and had lot of reminiscent and show all those picture to our kids. Especially close call was a picture #6 with lot of smoke. It is a huge iron and still plant in our home town. I did a lot of R&D work with them.

  24. Thomas Says:

    Thank you for finding them…
(A short comment to “citisen of latvia):
These fotos are NOT all propaganda. Because they do NOT show good life…. Just look at the photo of the red star and the chimneys or the house with a broken wall (3 people on a balcony)… They show life as it was Impoverished and full of life-lies - but also a safe and reasuring time for many.
    Won´t you agree?

  25. GREG TARNIAFrakkkkkkkk Says:

The eighth picture down. The one of a woman looking at barren supermarket shelves. I could almost cry. I can only imagine the despair she must have felt.

Many wonderful photos. But I don’t think that all of them are funny.

  26. Boris Says:

“Even at funeral of Stalin, who killed millions, the whole nation was crying…” Well, that shows you what a totally messed up country it was. Nobody there ever said “give me liberty, or give me death.” It’s “keep me comfortable with a bit of vodka, kill a few of my friends — it’s all good.”

  27. Гриф Says:

GregGreg practically said what I was going to say. I lived there for 30 years and left 20 months before USSR was done with. This collection is a good one! It doesn’t pretend to be a full image of a country with 170 mln population, stretching 11 time zomes. It just says (to me) how wonderful life is: funny, grim, stunning, nostalgic, etc.

  28. RathRath Says:

These pictures are wonderful, it certainly shows me a bit about Russia.
(I like the 12th one down, the picture seems amusing in a light hearted way)

  29. mooncougar13 Says:

since when is anything free from the government good?
i’d rather have to pay for something than have the government have anycontrol over it.
    great photos though, definitely

  30. Irina Says:

The best and the worst times for USSR are over. Something very real and deep is lost forever. This photos are from another life time, and what left for now is just a nostalgic memory.
    Beautiful display of complicated history.

  31. John Says:

It’s interesting seeing these pictures taken all those years ago. I think if we’d have seen these in the 50s and 60s, it would’ve put a face on the USSR. The USSR did a great disservice to their country by controlling information so closely. When you see the human side of a place, it’s hard to propagandize and objectify them.

    Great pictures.

  32. ddiDDiD Says:

Without getting drawn in to the politics - many of these pictures depict the essence of human emotion in all its forms.
I thought many of them were wonderful and peculiarly Eastern European in style and character

  33. Charlie Says:

I was there then (Brezhnev time). Now thirty years later I went back. People live better now. But for children and education it was better under the USSR.
    Charlie

  34. Rares Says:

Those picture are almost like Romania before ‘89. Beautiful yet frightening.

  35. pilot Says:

    Ленин жил.
    Ленин умер.
    Ленин будет как зомби жить.

  36. urbnskwrl Says:

It’s a bit silly to view these pictures and enter a debate about the failings of soviet communism. What these pictures are able to do quite well is convey a sense of nostalgia, the way you feel about your past, even if it is not always peachy. You get a feel for the optimism that was present in society and pushed by the government through propaganda campaigns. of course the reality was far from perfect

  37. Petey Says:

These photos are amazing. Amazing clarity. Wherever you go, you will find Happiness, even in the good ol’ USSR.

  38. Mikkalia Says:

In Soviet Russia, even Christopher Walken works the assembly line (picture 3).

  39. George Says:

Almost everyone in these photos seem genuinly happy, everything we hear about the USSR is that people were miserable.

    Beautiful.

  40. SDebraDdDEBRAebraebraDebraDebra Says:

The photo’s are Beautiful!! The pictures should be in History Museum. Beautiful work!!

  41. ClaytonClayton Says:

How can we be so much alike and yet still hold hatred for each other. What God made us like this.

  42. Sirius Says:

I remember back in the late ’70s, a friend of mine was working toward US citizenship. He had emigrated from the USSR. He managed to get a visitor’s visa for his mother to come and see him. I was there when he took her to a simple grocery store. She was dumbfounded and amazed! Looking at all the produce and products on the shelves, she asked her son, “You can buy all this?” to which he replied, “Of course! All that you want!” She almost fainted.

It was an interesting point of view for me…

  43. Daciandac Says:

it was very, very hard…4 everybody who lived in comunism…..i.m from romania….and i still suffer

  44. planetarium vagatio Says:

amazing photos! stopping arguing about politics and communism, life in russia has always been miserable before and after the ussr! these are just ordinary photos made by ordinary people that transcend whatever government was in power.
the four boys in front of the restaurant are particularly good

  45. Stuart Says:

This makes me want to get on craigslist and find me a Zaporozhets.

  46. dimitri Says:

life in soviet union was much better than today…….i live in russia….moscow….the people were really safe and happy…..i believe that one day soviet union will rise again…..i wish that……

  47. Roy Says:

Great pictures. A simpler life full of hardships and little rewards. I think most of us can recall earlier times when life was slower and more fulfilling.

  48. Catherine from Kazakhstan Says:

    won

  49. Catherine from Kazakhstan Says:

    hi everybody!
Pics are grate, it shows the true life!

Kz was the part of USSR in past, and u know i cant say that we live bad!We still love RUSSIA, and i cant understand why people from Latvia,Polsha(Baltic) ,Ukraine and so on are so cruel to Russia?!
ALL OF U need to understand that there is no USSR anymore!!!
But todays events(with Georgia and south Ossetia) shows us that people live in past, and they still dont like russians!!!

Sombody sad here, that it was horreble time…We live there, we see all that, hard time become only in 90…10 yers laft what we can see now?(not everyone here knows that for 10 yers its very hart to built a democratic from zero)
Now We see a grate Russia with stability economic…what we see in USA?…..no comments…
